Work Specs for Balcony Restoration and Waterproofing

Tenera was engaged to develop detailed repair specifications for the restoration and waterproofing of a residential balcony at Mohawk Rd E in Hamilton. The restoration process involved addressing multiple potential sources of leaks, including cracks, improper slab slope, and cold joints that lacked sufficient waterproofing. A comprehensive approach was specified to ensure long-term waterproofing performance.

Repair Method

Crack Repair

The first step in the repair process was to address existing cracks in the balcony slab. Tenera directed the contractor to route the cracks using a grinder to create a clean surface for treatment. They were then coated with an industrial-grade adhesive to enhance bonding strength. A specialised crack filler was applied, and the surface was ground smooth to prepare it for membrane installation.

Cold Joint Waterproofing

Cold joints, particularly where the balcony floor slab meets the vertical wall, were identified as a critical weak point. These joints were reinforced with fibreglass fleece and treated with a waterproofing coating to prevent future water ingress at the interface.

Waterproofing Membrane Installation

The final phase of the balcony restoration involved the application of a durable polyaspartic waterproofing membrane. A two-layer system was specified to maximise protection. First, a base coat was applied, and non-slip aggregates were broadcast onto the surface for enhanced safety. Once the base coat cured, a polyaspartic top coat was applied to fully encapsulate the surface, ensuring both water resistance and an aesthetic improvement to the balcony.

This repair method offers long-lasting waterproofing and improved structural integrity, tailored to meet the needs of the Mohawk Rd E project.

Benefits of Polyaspartic Coatings for Balcony Surfaces

Polyaspartic coatings provide several key benefits for balcony surfaces, making them an ideal choice for waterproofing and restoration. One of the primary advantages is their fast curing time, which significantly reduces downtime compared to other coatings, allowing the balcony to be back in use more quickly. Polyaspartic coatings are highly durable and resistant to UV radiation, which ensures that the surface maintains its integrity and appearance even when exposed to harsh weather conditions. They also offer superior abrasion and chemical resistance, which extends the lifespan of the waterproofing system. Additionally, polyaspartic coatings are flexible, allowing them to accommodate slight structural movements without cracking, providing a long-lasting and reliable solution for balcony waterproofing.
