When Tenera was hired by a GTA golf club to develop repair specifications for columns and expansion joint injection at their terrace, the following repair method was outlined and provided to the contractor, to ensure long-lasting durability and protection against environmental factors.
Column Repair Method
The first step in any durable concrete repair is thorough surface preparation. At the base of the column, drilling was performed, and all loose or deteriorated concrete was carefully chipped away to create a stable surface for the subsequent repair materials. This is critical to ensure proper bonding. Once the surface was prepped, an industrial-strength adhesive was applied to enhance adhesion, followed by the installation of a waterproofing membrane to protect the column from moisture infiltration. The final step involved parging the area to create a smooth and reinforced finish, providing both structural integrity and aesthetic improvement.
Expansion Joint Injection Process
To ensure long-lasting results for the expansion joint repair, meticulous surface preparation was again key. All joints were thoroughly cleaned out to remove any debris or old material, providing a clean surface for the injection process. Protective tape was applied to the edges to safeguard against material spillover. A specialised waterproofing material was then poured into the joints to prevent water ingress. A backer rod was inserted to regulate the depth of the joint and provide a stable base for the sealant. This method ensures that the joints remain flexible and durable, capable of withstanding both thermal expansion and contraction over time.
By employing these techniques and high-quality materials, Tenera has ensured that the repairs will withstand environmental stresses, preserving the terrace structure for years to come.
