How do you record site notes on a loud construction site?

To record site notes on a loud construction site, put a boom mic at your lips, not a phone at arm's length. The gear that works for noise, wind, gloves, and cold.

To record site notes on a construction site too loud to hear yourself, put a boom microphone at your lips instead of holding a phone at arm's length. Noise-cancelling construction headsets with a pilot-style boom mic clip under a hard hat, cost little, and hold your voice clear next to a wall being demolished. The phone in your pocket does the recording; the microphone is the part that has to be near your mouth.

Noise is the objection we hear most, and it travels with three cousins: hands that must stay free, wind at height, and fingers too cold to work a screen. Each is a real field constraint, none is a software problem, and people who work outdoors for a living solved all four years ago. This guide takes them in order, noise first.

The fix for demolition noise: a boom mic under the hard hat

A noise-cancelling construction headset with a boom microphone clips into your helmet, connects over Bluetooth to any phone, and puts the microphone right at your lips the way a pilot's sits. Hearing-protection brands make them for exactly this environment; pick one with an under-helmet band, Bluetooth, and a boom mic, from the same suppliers your crews already use for ear protection.

The reason it works is geometry rather than processing. A phone microphone at chest height competes with the demolition at roughly equal distance; a boom mic at your mouth does not. You also get the hearing protection you should be wearing anyway, so it is one fewer thing to carry. If a helmet-mounted set is too much, construction earbuds with an inline microphone on a short wire do the same job at a smaller scale, as long as the mic ends up near your face rather than clipped to your belt. Noise solved, the next constraint is your hands.

When both hands must stay free

Plenty of sites require both hands free at all times: ladders, work at height, anywhere fall arrest is in use. Move the camera off your hands and put the control somewhere a glove can reach. A chest or shoulder harness of the kind used for action cameras takes the camera; a wrist-mounted button large enough to press through a glove starts and stops recording. You climb with both hands, the camera films what you are looking at, and you narrate through the headset. The same wrist button turns out to matter again in winter, below.

Recording narration while flying a drone

Drones do not carry a microphone for you, so the narration goes on a separate recorder. A small voice recorder clipped to your lapel captures you, and anyone standing beside you, talking through what the screen shows as it happens. That conversation is often the most valuable thing produced on the whole visit, because it is two or three people interpreting live footage together rather than one person writing it up alone afterwards. Both files are then loaded into the report.

When the site is bigger than the scope: put the office on a call

One engineer reached a roof, realised there was far more to assess than the visit was scoped for, and wanted senior input before coming down. Wearing the construction headset, he dialled the office on Microsoft Teams, hit record, and had a thirty-minute discussion: one engineer on the roof, two colleagues at their desks seeing what he was seeing. The recording went into the report, images were extracted from the video, and the descriptions came from the discussion itself. The point worth copying is that three engineers' judgment was captured at the moment it was applied, instead of one engineer's recollection of it a week later.

Cold fingers and capacitive screens

Capacitive touchscreens stop recognising cold fingers, and gloves usually cannot come off. We watched an engineer photographing outdoors in an Ontario winter get cold enough that the iPad stopped registering taps entirely. Nobody designs for that failure in an office, and it is why the wrist button earns its place: a physical control that works through a glove is the difference, in February, between capturing the visit and losing it.

Try it with what you already own

Before buying anything, run one visit with the equipment you have: phone in your pocket, wired earbuds with the inline mic pulled up near your chin, voice memo running. That alone solves most of the noise problem and costs nothing.
